PROVO, Utah – One of the more polarizing topics for BYU football fans is the team’s colors. Yes, it might seem odd, but it’s a topic that will draw some passionate responses on social media or in person.
Some are team royal through thick and thin; others have a loyal allegiance to navy blue (mono-royal). Then there is some like head coach Kalani Sitake, who wear them all. It’s not uncommon for the sixth-year head coach to wear a royal blue hat with a navy blue jacket. He’s done it three times this year (in case you were wondering).
Both navy blue and royal blue are official colors in BYU’s brand identity. So why not rock both colors?
“Whether it’s royal or navy, we own it because it’s BYU blue,” said Kalani Sitake in 2016 when introducing himself to BYU fans.
Again, it’s a controversial take at times for BYU football fans. You could say it’s so controversial that it has never appeared together on uniforms. Until this week, well, at least for practice.
BYU will wear royal blue helmets, white jerseys, and white pants against the 3-7 Eagles this Saturday. So to break in the royal blue lids, the players have been donning those helmets with their navy blue practice threads.

BYU Football Navy & Royal Blue Uniform
BYU Director of Player Experience and Equipment Operations Billy Nixon posted a picture of the royal and navy blue combination with tight end Masen Wake and wide receiver Samson Nacua in the picture. Honestly, the navy and royal together don’t look too bad.

BYU currently has 26 different uniform combinations in their 2021 identity guide. Each year could potentially have new additions. Would you be a fan of a royal/navy mashup? Honestly, in this day and age of uniforms, try it out.

BYU football players were given the autonomy last spring to select which threads they would wear for each game in the 2021 season. So maybe in this year’s bowl game or next year, we could see royal and navy blue together.
