SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women’s basketball team passed their first test of the season with ease after a 106-71 blowout win over Xavier.

It’s the first time since the 1978-79 season that Utah women’s hoops has scored 100 points or more in back-to-back games. The 106 points scored is the third-most in program history, beating out Utah’s 105 points scored in their season opener on Wednesday night against Lipscomb.

Utah had three players score 20 points or more, led by Brynna Maxwell and Jenna Johnson with 21 points apiece. Kennady McQueen added 20 points in the win. Maxwell shot 6-for-9 from the field and 5-of-8 from the three-point line.

“We had three scorers with twenty points, which is the first time in my career,” Utah head coach Lynne Roberts said after the win. “We’re sharing it well, and I love it. We only had four turnovers in the last five minutes of the game, and when we were taking care of the ball, we ended up shooting it well. I was pleased with the intensity and hustle. I loved seeing Kennady dive for the ball at the end of the second half when we were up big. I thought Jenna was fantastic today, 9-of-13 shooting and seven rebounds, certainly a breakout game for her. We need to work on our fouls, but other than that, I’m really happy with our effort.”

The Utes have outscored their first two opponents 211-127. Their opponents have shot a combined 44-of-118 for 37%. On offense they have shot a combined 74-for-146 for 50.6% from the field.

Dru Gylten had a strong performance with seven points, seven assists and three rebounds with just one turnover.

Utah improved their record to 2-0 on the season. They will return to the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Tuesday, November 16 to host Saint Mary’s (CA). Tip-off is at 7 p.m. MT on UtahUtes.com.
