Dixie State Holds Off Southern Utah In Home Opener

ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Dixie State Trailblazers were able to get past Southern Utah with an 83-76 win in their home opener on Friday night.
Dixie State had things rolling in the first half after outscoring Southern Utah 47-30 but SUU made a comeback in the second half that came up short.
The Thunderbirds outscored the Trailblazers 46-36 in the second half but it wasn’t enough.
Hunter Schofield led all scorers with 29 points on 12-of-19 shooting from the field in 28 minutes. Frank Staine added 11 points, while both Trevon Allfrey and Cameron Gooden dropped 10 points apiece.
The Trailblazers shot 51% from the field, 31% from the three-point line and 71% at the free throw line. A big difference in the game was DSU getting 37 points from their bench.

Southern Utah was led by John Knight III with 20 points, six rebounds and five assists but committed eight turnovers. Dre Marin poured in 19 points as they were the only two Thunderbirds to reach double figures.
SUU shot 37% from the floor, 34% from the perimeter and 70% at the charity stripe.
Dixie State improved their record to 1-1 on the season. They will be off for a week before heading to Northridge, California for the CSUN Good Sam Empire Classic. DSU will face Texas State on Friday, November 19 at noon MT.
Southern Utah dropped to 1-1 on the season. They will be on the road to face Saint Mary’s on Monday, November 15 at 8 p.m. MT on the WCC Network.
