PROVO, Utah – The 2021-22 BYU basketball schedule is the Cougars penultimate slate in the West Coast Conference. BYU is set to join the Big 12 Conference beginning in 2023.
But until then, the Cougars will set their sights on returning to the NCAA Tournament and trying to go out of the WCC with their first-ever league title. In order to do that, they’ll have to get through the preseason No. 1 team in the land, Gonzaga.

If there’s a coach in the WCC that could possibly take down the Zags, it’s third-year BYU head coach Mark Pope. Pope fielded a versatile roster that gives his team a lot of different looks led by senior guard Alex Barcello.
Barcello returns to BYU after taking advantage of the NCAA’s blanket waiver that allowed everyone to have a free year of eligibility last season amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
Joining Barcello in the backcourt at BYU is Milwaukee grad transfer Te’Jon Lucas, who like Barcello, benefits from the NCAA waiver. This will be Lucas’ sixth year in college basketball.
The Cougars also bring back preseason All-WCC forward Caleb Lohner. Lohner, who loves to study former Boston Celtics star Larry Bird, is one of the best rebounders to come through BYU over the last 20 years.
BYU returns forward Gideon George and center Richard Harward who are starters in Mark Pope’s initial five.
The 2021-22 BYU basketball schedule features at least three games against Power Six competition in the non-conference play. BYU will have a total of 14 games played at the Marriott Center this year during the building’s 50th anniversary.
