BYU Football Earns 600th Win In Program History

PROVO, Utah — BYU football records its 600th win in a long history of winning in Provo. The Cougars defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 66-49 in the return of long-time head coach Bronco Mendenhall.

BYU’s first official collegiate season was in 1922; they won just a single game in their inaugural season. The Cougars became the 60th program in the history of college football to win 600 games.
In its first 47 seasons, until LaVell Edwards was hired as the head coach, BYU won 173 games. Since 1972, in Edwards’ first season, the Cougars have won 426 games. Edwards won 257 games (Tied for 7th all-time in FBS), Gary Crowton won 26, Bronco Mendenhall 99 and Kalani Sitake has won 45. BYU is eighth nationally among all college football programs in total wins since 1972.
