Hammon, an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs, was a three-time All-American at Colorado State. She faced BYU on an annual basis during her college when the Cougars and Rams were members of the WAC.
The Becky Hammon Award began two years ago in 2020 and was awarded to South Dakota’s Ciara Duffy. Last year, Florida Gulf Coast’s Kierstan Bell took home the award.
Gonzales enters her fourth year with the BYU program, but due to a medical redshirt year in 2020 and a COVID-19 year last season, the 5-foot-10 guard is still only a sophomore in her BYU career.
Last year, Gonzales was West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Year, averaging 17.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game. BYU head coach Jeff Judkins once called Gonzales’ BYU’s version of Donovan Mitchell for the type of impact on the BYU Women’s Basketball program.
To be eligible for the Becky Hammon Award, players must compete in one of the 26 conferences deemed to be “mid-major.” That includes the ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC. In 2023, BYU athletics will be leaving the West Coast Conference to be a full-time member of the Big 12 Conference.
Shaylee Gonzales and the BYU Women’s Basketball program tip off the 2021-22 season on Tuesday, November 9 at 4:30 p.m. (MT) at the Marriott Center against Lipscomb.
