PROVO, Utah – BYU football has moved into the top 10 of major college football top 25 polls. After defeating Utah State on Friday night to improve to 5-0, BYU moved up from 13 to No. 10 in the AP Top 25 and five spots in the Coaches Poll to No. 10 as well.

This is the second consecutive season BYU has found itself in the top 10 of the major polls. In addition, it’s the first time in program history that BYU has opened up back-to-back seasons with a 5-0 record.
BYU benefitted from a lot of programs in front of them this past weekend, suffering defeats. Arkansas, Notre Dame, Florida, and Ole Miss were all ranked ahead of BYU entering week five, and each one of them suffered a loss.
What also helped BYU is that Arizona State strengthened the Cougars over the weekend. The win over Arizona State got even better after the Sun Devils took down nationally-ranked UCLA in the Rose Bowl. As a result, ASU jumped back into the Top 25 polls at No. 22 in the AP and No. 25 in the Coaches.
What’s impressive about BYU’s rise into the Top 10 is that they are doing it by testing their depth. On Friday, the Cougars played their third-string quarterback in Jacob Conover against Utah State after Baylor Romney suffered a head injury. In addition, Jaren Hall has been out the past two weeks due to a rib injury he suffered against Arizona State.
BYU will have more opportunities to climb in the national polls in the coming weeks, with games against Baylor, Washington State, Virginia, and USC still on the schedule. But first, the Cougars will host Boise State this Saturday in Provo at 1:30 p.m. on ABC.
