LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Excluding last year’s strange, covid-shortened season the Utah Utes have not started a football season 1-2 in 14 years. That won’t happen again on Saturday against San Diego State either.
The Utes will win their final non-conference game before Pac-12 play begins on Saturday thanks to these two BOLD predictions for Utah’s game against San Diego State.

CAN’T COVER COVEY
My first bold prediction for the Utes is that wide receiver/returner Britain Covey will find the endzone against the Aztecs. What’s so bold about that? Well, he’s going to do it twice.
Covey will haul in his first receiving touchdown of the season on Saturday. But he will also electrify Utah fan’s with his first punt returned for a touchdown as well.
Hey #Utes fans… it's officially game day!!! Or should we call it Swaggerday?
I think the Utes are going to have a big bounce back against SDSU. I've got 2 bold predictions for this game and this guy has something to do with one of them. Stay tuned! #GoUtes l @KSLSports l pic.twitter.com/ukyyP7iANn— Sam Farnsworth (@Samsworth_KSL) September 18, 2021
Covey had three touchdown receptions in 2020, one in each game he played in the shortened season. He also returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown in a win against Oregon State last season, the second punt returned for a TD in his career.
LUCKY NUMBER 18
Clark Phillips III returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown in 2020 against Washington State. That marked the 17th straight season the Utes defense has had a pick six in a game.
That streak will be extended to 18 straight against San Diego State. Once again it will be Clark Phillips III extending the streak for Utah.

Utah’s defense has just one interception through the first two games this season.
FINAL PREDICTION
If I’m in the prediction business this weekend of course I’m going to take a stab at the final score. Like I said at the beginning of this article, the Utes will not start 1-2 this season.
Utah 38, San Diego State 21.
