SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Donovan Mitchell is teaming with Clorox to help donate a million dollars to DonorsChoose, a non-profit organization that raises money for independent public school projects.

Mitchell discussed the initiative Wednesday on 97.5 The Zone.

“Being able to have an appreciation for teachers, when you work with a brand like Clorox, when they reached out to us and said ‘This is what we want to do,’ I was like, ‘Man, this is fantastic,'” Mitchell said.

The Utah Jazz guard is the son of a school teacher and wanted to team with the Clorox brand to help give back.

“We want to show our appreciation to teachers and with Clorox donating a million dollars to DonorChoose which helps cover, books, disinfectants, food, as well as Wi-Fi, for this virtual world we live in.”

Teachers often fund their classroom projects with money out of their own pocket, sometimes totaling upwards of $500-600 dollars according to Mitchell.

To help cover those costs, Clorox began matching donations to DonorsChoose up to $1 million beginning September 7.

According to the official Clorox website, these are the criteria needed to qualify for the brand’s funding.

  • You teach at a school where more than three-quarters of students are from low-income households: Read our Help Center article to learn more about how we define economic need.
  • Create a project requesting classroom basics.
    • Classroom basics includes items like paper, writing utensils, binders, dry erase boards, index cards, stickers, posters and laminators.
  • Keep your total project goal under $700 including taxes, shipping, fees, and the suggested donation to support DonorsChoose.

In addition to his work with Clorox, Mitchell has teamed with the Granite School District during the COVID-19 to make sure students were able to continue to get healthy meals during lunchtime, even when schools were closed.

Mitchell’s donation helped as many as 10,040 students per day avoid missing lunch according to the Jazz.

So far, Clorox has matched nearly $600,000 in donations to DonorsChoose.
