SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced that the club has parted ways with head coach Marc Dos Santos.

The MLS club announced the move on Friday, August 27.

Dos Santos’ departure was the second major coaching move to take place in the league on Friday. Earlier in the day, Real Salt Lake parted ways with head coach Freddy Juarez.

Vancouver said that Whitecaps FC director of methodology Vanni Sartini would serve as acting head coach with Dos Santos’ departure.

“I am very grateful for my time with the Whitecaps and appreciate the support I received during a challenging two plus seasons,” Dos Santos said in a statement. “There are a lot of great people at this club, who work extremely hard, and I’m thankful for the time we shared together. I am also especially thankful to the players, technical and support staff and wish everyone all the very best. I am very excited about the future.”

Dos Santos was hired as Vancouver’s head coach in 2018.

“We are very grateful to Marc and Phil for the hard work and sacrifice that they put in to lead our team over the past two and a half years,” Whitecaps FC sporting director and chief executive officer Axel Schuster said. “We are extremely committed to continue moving this club and team in the right direction, and at this time we felt that it was necessary to make a change to achieve our next steps.”

To begin the 2021 MLS season, the Whitecaps played its home games at Rio Tinto Stadium, the home of RSL, because of COVID-19 concerns in Canada. Vancouver recently moved its contests back north of the border after the restrictions were lifted.

Vancouver has earned 23 points this season and owns a 5-8-7 record.

The Whitecaps’ next game is a home match against Real Salt Lake on Sunday, August 29 at 8 p.m. (MDT). The match will broadcast on the KSL Sports app and on KSLSports.com.
