BYU will travel to Miami on September 19, 2026 and then the Canes will make a return trip to Provo to open the 2028 season on September 2.
History of BYU/Miami on the gridiron
The greatest win in BYU football history was against the Miami Hurricanes in 1990. That season, No. 16 BYU defeated the No. 1 ranked Canes during their zenith as a college football powerhouse.
Will #BYU’s win over No. 1 Miami in 1990 always be considered the greatest win in #BYUFootball history? @kslsports @baiamontematt pic.twitter.com/5HAJ3MTFkl

The win in 1990 launched BYU quarterback Ty Detmer into national stardom and eventually guiding him to winning the Heisman Trophy.

That win for BYU has even garnered pop culture references in TV shows, courtesy of The Rock. Even former Miami Hurricane legend Michael Irvin said on an ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentary, The U, that BYU shouldn’t have even been on the same field as the mighty Hurricanes.
“We are excited to announce this series with Miami,” said BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe. “We are always looking for opportunities to schedule storied football programs like Miami. Traveling to ACC country and competing in an NFL stadium will be a great experience for our coaches, players and fans. We are also excited to have the Hurricanes return to LaVell Edwards Stadium. I was a graduate assistant at BYU in 1990 when Miami came to Provo. It was one of the great games in BYU football history.”
#BYU's 2026 schedule as of now with the addition of Miami.
Sep. 5 – at Troy
Sep. 12 – Arizona
Sep. 19 – at Miami
Sep. 26 – at Virginia Tech
Oct. 2 – Utah State
Nov. 7 – Boise State
Nov. 28 – at Stanford#BYUFootball @kslsports— Mitch Harper (@Mitch_Harper) August 12, 2021
Both teams have each won a game in the all-time series. First, Miami crushed BYU in the historic Orange Bowl back in 1988. Then, BYU shocked the world in 1990 amidst a rare hurricane watch for Provo, Utah.
#BYU's 2028 schedule will open with the Miami Hurricanes.
Here's the schedule (so far) in '28:
Sep. 2 – Miami
Sep. 9 – at Utah
Sep. 16 – Ole Miss
Sep. 23 – Boise State
Oct. 7 – Houston
Nov. 25 – at Stanford#BYUFootball @kslsports— Mitch Harper (@Mitch_Harper) August 12, 2021
BYU’s 2026 schedule with the addition of Miami would give eight games, five of which against Power Five competition, with four coming away from Provo. Adding the Hurricanes to the 2028 schedule gives BYU six games, four against P5 teams (Utah, Ole Miss, Stanford), and three of those would take place in Provo.
