SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Tony Finau will not be in the field for this week’s Wyndham Championship suggesting the 31-year-old Utahn is comfortable with his current Ryder Cup ranking of 12th.

Ryder Cup Positioning

The next big tournament is the Ryder Cup which is scheduled to take place from September 24-26 at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. 12 members from the United States and Europe will compete against one and another in an effort to secure continental dominance.

The top six players on the points list will automatically be selected to the team. The following six players will be selected by the United States captain, Steve Stricker.

Currently, Collin Morikawa leads all players atop the points list with 18,853.61 points. Then, in order of the top six, the rankings are Dustin Johnson, Bryson Dechambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, and Xander Schauffele.

Finau is currently ranked 12th, he would be the final player selected to the team if the Ryder Cup was this week. He holds a healthy 959.74 point lead on Webb Simpson who is currently ranked 13th in the rankings.

FedEx Cup Playoffs Await

The PGA Tour season is winding down as only four tournaments remain before the conclusion of the 2020/21 PGA Tour season. The FedEx Cup playoffs begin next week when The Northern Trust invites the top 125 players on the FedEx Cup rankings to Liberty National Golf Course. The following week the field is dwindled down to 70 players for the BMW Championship before the top 30 players compete for a $30 million purse at the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Ryder Cup will take place three weeks after the Tour Championship.

Finau is ranked 23rd in the FedEx Cup rankings.

It seems that Finau is under no pressure to play well given his healthy point advantage over Simpson in the Ryder Cup standings. Moreover, given his current FedEx Cup rankings, Finau can rest this week before enduring a grueling three-week stretch that will include a lot of golf.
