Five Local College Football Players Named Preseason All-America By Athlon Sports

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Athlon Sports named five local college football players to the publication’s 2021 Preseason All-America Team.
The 2021 Preseason All-America Team was released by Athlon Sports on Tuesday, July 13.
Five locals players received preseason honors by the sports magazine including Utah’s Devin Lloyd and Britain Covey, BYU’s James Empey and Jake Oldroyd, and Utah State’s Savon Scarver.

Utah Utes
Devin Lloyd – Second-Team Defense
Last season, Lloyd had a great year despite a shortened Pac-12 season. He recorded 48 total tackles, 33 solo tackles, two sacks, and one forced fumble in only five games.
Britain Covey – Second-Team Specialist
In 2020, Covey bounced back from injury and put up solid number in three contests. In the return game, he ran the ball back 22 times for 246 yards and a touchdown. As a receiver, Covey had 19 receptions for 264 yards and three touchdowns.

BYU Cougars
James Empey – Fourth-Team Center
Last season, Empey anchored BYU’s outstanding offensive line and helped lead the Cougars to an 11-1 record.
Jake Oldroyd – Fourth-Team Specialist
In 2020, Oldroyd was a perfect 13-13 on his field goal attempts. His only misses came on two extra point kicks out of 62 PATs.

Empey, Oldroyd, and the rest of the Cougars open the 2021 season against the Arizona Wildcats on September 4.
Utah State Aggies
Savon Scarver – Third-Team Specialist
During his college career, Scarver has been an outstanding special teams player. He’s run back 82 kickoffs for 2,294 yards and six touchdowns.
