SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Tony Finau played poorly during the first round of the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines South after finishing at three-over-par.
Rough Start For Finau
His round was delayed by an hour and a half as a result of fog in the San Diego Area. The entire field was held from starting due to the inclement weather although fortunately, the small delay will have no impact on the future three rounds.
Finau, 31, made his first birdie of the round on the 18th hole. He had previously scored bogey on four separate occasions.
Bogeys fell on holes 1, 6, 11 and 15. Sadly, Finau was never able to find his groove on a golf course that has been very kind to him in the past. His worst finish at Torrey Pines South over his last five starts has been a T13.

Par Putts Galore
Finau was tested early in his round with a number of big and nerve-wracking par putts. Fortunately, he was up to the challenge and was able to navigate his way around the golf course reasonably well. If Finau’s putter had not saved him on so many occasions, his opening round at Torrey Pines South could have been far more traumatic.
He enters the clubhouse and begins preparations for Friday’s tee time seven shots off the current leader Russell Henley who finds himself at four-under-par.
Finau will tee off the 10th tee at 2:47 p.m. on Friday alongside Daniel Berger and Abraham Ancer.
The morning broadcast will be available on Peacock TV before the Golf Channel takes over at 11 a.m.
