SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – BYU announced plans for a return to full capacity in LaVell Edwards Stadium for the 2021 football season.

The university made the announcement on Friday, May 21.

“We are really excited to welcome back Cougar Nation into LaVell Edwards Stadium this fall,” BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe said in a statement. “I know our football team is looking forward to a great schedule this season. We are all extremely excited to be able to see the return of the unmatched atmosphere generated by BYU fans in LaVell Edwards Stadium.”

The school said that capacity will be based on the number of COVID-19 cases and is subject to change.

“Plans for full stadium capacity will continue to be contingent on COVID-19 cases staying at a low rate and will also be influenced by vaccination rates. With these variables, plans are subject to change,” BYU announced.

The full capacity of LaVell Edwards Stadium is 63,470.

Last season, BYU football’s largest home crowd was when 6,843 fans showed up for the Cougars’ contest against Western Kentucky.

The Cougars begin the season with a neutral site game against the Arizona Wildcats. BYU and Arizona will play at the home of the Las Vegas Raiders, Allegiant Stadium, on September 4.

BYU plays the first home game of its 2021 slate against the Utah Utes on September 11.
