Zach Wilson vs. Taysom Hill?
Zach Wilson is assumed to be the starter for the New York Jets in the 2021 season after the Jets used their No. 2 overall pick on the former BYU star. Wilson did say the position needs to be earned, but based on the competition in the Jets QB room, it looks to be Wilson’s job if he’s healthy.
As for Taysom Hill, he is trimming up his body from being built to handle the “Swiss Army Knife” role or “F position” in Sean Payton’s Saints offense to now a slender, full-time QB physique. Hill will compete with former No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston to be the Saints’ starting quarterback.
This is the first year the Saints will be without future NFL Hall of Famer Drew Brees. Brees is now transitioning into a career in broadcasting where he will be an analyst for NBC on Notre Dame football games.
The last time two BYU football QB’s started in an NFL game
If Taysom Hill and Zach Wilson both start at quarterback for the Saints and Jets, it will mark the first time since November 10th, 1997, that a pair of BYU quarterbacks start in the same NFL game. The last two to do it were Steve Young with the 49ers and Ty Detmer of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Young and the 49ers won that game 24-12. The two former BYU legends also met the previous year in the NFC Wild Card round, with Young’s 49ers winning that one as well, 10-7.
