SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Pac-12 insider Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News gave an update on Sunday on the search for the next commissioner of the conference.

The next commissioner will need to be in place by the end of June as Larry Scott announced he will be stepping down on June 30. Scott made the announcement on January 20.

During that time, many names have been thrown around as possible replacement for Scott, who leaves his position after 11 years. Another possible candidate is out of contention as WCC commissioner Gloria Nevarez will reportedly sign a contract extension.

Below is what Wilner is reporting after talking to multiple sources who are familiar with the process.

The search firm is vetting as many as eight to 10 candidates with interviews expected to start soon. None of the athletic directors that are in the conference currently are being considered for the position. Four names that were originally thrown out there when the news of Scott resigning came down, including Alabama AD Greg Byrne, Ohio State AD Gene Smith, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby and Nevarez are not candidates.

Wilner is reporting that strong consideration is being given to executives in the sports business world. For more on the report from Wilner on the commissioner search, click here.
