OGDEN, Utah – The Weber State men’s basketball program added two players from the NCAA transfer portal that will be key contributors.

Weber State basketball added Marquette transfer Koby McEwen and Jamison Overton from Utah Valley.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have Koby and JJ join our program,” said Weber State head coach Randy Rahe. They are both very talented and highly experienced players that will definitely be great fits with the culture of our program. They are both great students, are highly competitive, and are all about winning. They have both played at a very high level and I look for both of them to make major impacts on our team this coming season.”

Koby McEwen Joining Weber State Basketball

McEwen has ties to the state of Utah as he started his college career with Utah State under Tim Duryea. In those two seasons in Logan, McEwen was named Mountain West Freshman of the Year in 2017. As a sophomore in 2018, he earned third team all-conference honors. He played 61 games for the Aggies while averaging 15.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game.

The Toronto, Ontario native transferred to Marquette and played 55 games for the Golden Eagles, posting averages of 10 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. McEwen scored in double figures 12 times during the 2020-21 season, including a season-high 28 points against Green Bay.

“Koby is a strong, powerful, and very athletic guard who can score the ball at all three levels,” Rahe added. “He really affects the game in a variety of ways. He is an excellent guard rebounder, a high assist player, and is a terrific defender.”

Jamison Overton Joining The Wildcats

Before his time at Utah Valley, Jamison Overton, also known as J.J., spent two seasons at Saddleback College at the JUCO level where we was a two-time First Team All-Orange Empire Conference selection. After a successful two seasons at Utah Valley, Overton will now go to Weber State as a graduate transfer.

While at Utah Valley, Overton played in 29 games with one start as a junior during the 2019-20 season. He averaged 7.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game, while shooting 47 percent from the field. This past season, Overton played 19 games and started every contest, posting averages of 15.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. He was tied for the highest scoring average on the team this past season.

“JJ is a highly athletic player with a good skill level and feel for the game,” Rahe said. “He is an excellent slasher with a very good mid-range game and an excellent finisher around the rim. He is also a high-level rebounder and high assist player and an excellent defender.”

Weber State had a 17-6 overall record and 12-3 in Big Sky play. They lost to Montana in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.
