SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Tony Finau has finished his first round of the Valero Texas Open and will enter the second round at one-over-par, 73.
Finau began his round with a bogey off the first. But quickly recovered after three birdies on holes 2, 5, and 7. He was two-under-par as he approached the final hole on the front nine. But a poor second shot saw Finau in amongst the trees. He would chip out short of the green, chip again to within 2 feet and tap his bogey in.
Another bogey on 12 and Finau was quickly back to his starting score of even par. It seemed as though Finau was cruising to a first-round score of even-par, that was until he stood on the tee box of the 17th hole. Finau made double bogey on 17 and was three-over-par. However, fortunately, he made a birdie on 18 to finish at just one-over-par.

Finau sits nine shots behind the leader Camilo Villegas who ended the first round at eight-under-par.
He is playing in a featured group alongside Cameron Champ and last week’s winner Joel Dahmen. They will tee it off the 10th hole tomorrow at 6:58 a.m.
The Valero Texas Open is the final PGA Tournament before The Masters next week. Finau has been in poor form entering the week after he missed the cut for the first time since August at The Players Championship and then failed to escape the group stage of the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play last week.
