Report: Real Salt Lake Expected To Sign Winger Jonathan Menéndez To Multiyear Year Deal
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Real Salt Lake has signed Jonathan Menéndez from Argentinian Club Atlético Independiente, reporter César Luis Merlo states on his Twitter profile.
Menéndez, 27, joins RSL after spending most of his professional career in Argentina, however, he did spend three years with Spanish club Sevilla FC between 2012-15.
The deal, which is yet to be signed officially, will be worth $1.35 million. The contract expires in December of 2024, giving Menéndez three and a half years at RSL.
Furthermore, Menéndez’s arrival is expected in June, according to the report.
His arrival marks the second winger to join RSL this off-season joining Anderson Julio who joined the club on loan from Liga MX club Atlético San Luis on March 12, 2021. Menéndez is the fifth winger on RSL’s roster joining Julio, Maikel Chang, Justin Meram, and Jeizon Ramirez.
Menéndez Club History
Menéndez began his professional career in 2010 when he signed his first contract with Chacarita Juniors, the same club he developed with as a youth player. He then traveled to Spain and mustered 54 games and 4 goals for Sevilla B before returning to Argentina in 2015 and rejoining Chacarita Juniors.
A year later he was signed by Talleres. While with Talleres he played 30 games scoring 10 goals, his best game to goal ratio of his career.
In 2018, he inked a deal with Club Atlético Independiente where he played 13 games and scored on 4 occasions. But, much like his career, he was placed on two separate loan spells to Qatari-based club Al Rayyan and Talleres.
The move to Major League Soccer and RSL marks the sixth club of his professional career to date.
