Game Night Live Rewind: Surprises And Sleepers Heading Into State Tournament

Feb 22, 2021, 4:05 PM

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The boys basketball regular season in the state of Utah is over and now it’s time to look ahead to the upcoming state tournament.

Some surprises came when the brackets were released over the weekend. Plus, there are some potential upsets to watch for as the postseason gets started this week.

Game Night Live Rewind hosts Dusty Lister and Dane Stewart broke down the 5A and 6A boys basketball brackets after they were released on Saturday. They also gave their picks.

Boys Basketball Tournament Surprises And Sleepers

The big surprise from the brackets that were released came in 6A. Stewart thought it was interesting that Lone Peak didn’t get a first round bye in the tournament.

“We did see a Region 4 team in 6A not get a first round bye that being Lone Peak,” Stewart said. “We did that Skyridge/Lone Peak game on Friday night. We knew that was gonna have significant seeding implications, it certainly did and so that was one that was surprising to me that Lone Peak did not have enough for a first round bye. There are some interesting matchups in the first round. Herrmann beats Riverton last game of the year in overtime, that’s going to be the first round matchup. We have West Jordan and Taylorsville in the first round. So we have some familiar matchups like that particularly in 6A.”
