SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Newly appointed scout Luke Mulholland has made a bold statement; Real Salt Lake is required to reach the Western Conference Final in any given year, with an MLS Cup birth a bonus for the club.
“The playoffs are not an achievement. The playoffs are a requirement, and getting into the Western Conference final is for me the the goal. and then winning the whole thing is a bonus.”
That is, at least, how he is preparing himself to find and attract the next generation of stars to Utah.
Mullholland enjoyed a 10-year professional career, 6 of those years were spent in Utah.
Congrats on an amazing career, Luke!
Luckily for us, it's not goodbye … it's we'll see you in the office tomorrow morning. 9 am sharp. The real work has just begun.

“I just feel like I have such a strong relationship, connection with ourselves as an organization and Utah as a community. This is home for me and I’m more passionate about starting my career here lending my trade here, rather than, chasing the football across the country elsewhere,” Mullholland said.
Scouting is an exciting new journey for Mullholland who is adamant that the club will return to its glory days through his help. The expectation, for Mullholland and the club, is high. Reaching the Western Conference Final every season is a challenge.
Mullholland will base himself in Salt Lake City, for now. When the current global pandemic deteriorates he hopes to be on the road a lot more and scouting players in person. The club uses a system called WysScout which helps the front office scour the world for talents.
The end goal, outside of returning to the Western Conference Final is to get the fans back in the stands.
“We want to get back to playing possession-based football, but also attractive football, I mean, the reason why we play the sport is not only just to win but also to get the fans up and out of the seats.”
