SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Weber State football received some deserved preseason recognition in the HERO Sports Preseason Top 25 rankings released on Monday.
Jay Hill’s Weber State football program came in ranked No. 3 in the HERO Sports Preseason Top 25 rankings. The three-time defending Big Sky Conference champions are coming off of a 2019 campaign where they went to the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs and ended the season with an 11-4 record.
The Wildcats are one of just two Big Sky teams to appear in the HERO Sports preseason rankings as Eastern Washington came in at No. 14.
Defending FCS Champion North Dakota State is the No. 1 team in the rankings followed by South Dakota State at No. 2.

Rounding out the top 5 of the preseason ranking is James Madison at No. 4 and Villanova fifth. Weber State offensive lineman Ty Whitworth was named a HERO Sports Preseason All-American. Whitworth is a two-time All-Big Sky first team selection. Entering his senior season, Whitworth has started all 42 games of his Weber State career.
The Wildcats will open the 2021 spring football season on Saturday, February 27 at Idaho State. They will play a six-game conference-only schedule, facing the Bengals, Cal Poly and Southern Utah on the road. Weber State will host UC Davis, Northern Arizona and Idaho State.
The 16-team FCS Playoffs are scheduled to begin on April 24. Weber State was picked to win the Big Sky Conference in the preseason poll back in July. It was the first time they were picked as the preseason favorite.
