Scheduled games between the two in-state programs separated by 126 miles were originally contracted through 2022. The new extension sends the series out to 2026.
BYU/Utah State extend football series to 2026 season
September 16, 2023 – at Utah State
October 4, 2024 – at BYU
October 3, 2025 – at Utah State
October 2, 2026 – at BYU
Both teams are scheduled to meet in 2021 and 2022. BYU will travel to Logan this season on October 1st this fall. Utah State will make its first trip to Provo since 2018 on September 30, 2022.
In 2020, the two teams didn’t meet due to the Coronavirus pandemic. It was the first break in the in-state series since 2007.
BYU and Utah State have traditionally played their Old Wagon Wheel game on the Friday before The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints General Conference weekend. These new dates from 2024-2026 fall in line with that tradition.
The only exception is the 2023 date on September 16th. It marks the earliest meeting between the two programs since the 1986 season when they met on September 6th. Back in 2006, BYU and Utah State met a week before General Conference on September 23rd of that season.
BYU football finished the 2020 season ranked No. 11 in the final AP rankings with an 11-1 record. Utah State finished its Mountain West-only schedule in 2020 with a 1-5 record. The Aggies are now led by new head coach Blake Anderson, who coached the previous seven years at Arkansas State.
