SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Texas Longhorns named former BYU quarterback and current Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian as the program’s next head football coach.

The Longhorns filled the head coach vacancy after firing Tom Herman on Saturday, January 2.

On Friday, January 1, Sarkisian helped the Crimson Tide to a Rose Bowl victory over Notre Dame.

Alabama will face Ohio State in the College Football Playoff National Championship game on Monday, January 11.

Sarkisian was recently honored as the recipient of the 2020 Broyles Award.

The award is given annually to college football’s best assistant coach.

Tom Herman out at Texas

“Herman, who has a $15 million buyout for the final three years on his Texas contract, was notified by Texas on Saturday that he wouldn’t be retained as coach, sources told Horns247,” Chip Brown of 247Sports reported. “Herman went 32-18 in four seasons at Texas, including a 7-3 record this year in which the Longhorns got off to a 1-2 start in Big 12 play, causing the school’s top donors to put pressure on UT administrators to pursue three-time national championship coach Urban Meyer beginning in October.”

About Steve Sarkisian

Prior to his coaching career, Sarkisian played quarterback at BYU from 1995-96. He led the Cougars to a 14-1 record in his senior season.

He finished his BYU career passing for 7,758 yards and 55 touchdowns.

After his time in Provo, Sarkisian played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders from 1997-99 before making the transition to coaching.

Sarkisian has served as a coach in college football and the NFL. He was the quarterback coach for the Oakland Raiders in 2004 and the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons from 2017-18.

In the college ranks, Sarkisian has been the head coach at Washington and USC.

He owns a career record of 46-45 and 2-2 in bowl games as a college football head coach.
