SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The BYU Cougars beat the Tigers of Texas Southern 87-71 Monday night at the Marriott Center.
Brandon Averette had 30 points and 5 rebounds, shooting 6-13 from behind the three-point line.
“I just kept shooting the ball, trusting the work I put in every day,” Averette said after the game. “I just finished every shot, and it all felt the same, and they started falling for me.”

Tigers Refused To Go Quietly
After BYU led the game 42-32 at halftime, Texas Southern cut the lead down to single digits at two points in the second half. However, the Cougars didn’t flinch.
“We just treated it as a test and we just wanted to get better from it,” said Averette. “We knew they weren’t going to give up and they were going to fight through the whole game. It was a chance to get better in handling situations like this.”
BYU put the game away in the final 6 minutes, and finished the contest by making 4 of its last 5 shot attempts.
