Southern Utah Receives Invitation To Join Western Athletic Conference

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Southern Utah University Athletics has officially received an invitation to join the Western Athletic Conference.
The WAC is planning to expand their conference and want the Thunderbirds to be a part of it.
KSL Sports received a statement from SUU Athletics on Tuesday.
“We received an official invitation from the Western Athletic Conference yesterday (Monday),” the statement read. “We have not made a final decision, but are seriously considering it.”

Before joining the Big Sky on July 1, 2012, Southern Utah was a member of The Summit League. They have six men’s and nine women’s NCAA sanctioned sports, including basketball, cross country, football, golf, and track and field for the men. The women have basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, track and field, and volleyball.
The Big Sky Conference currently has 11 members, including SUU, Weber State, Eastern Washington, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Portland State, and Sacramento State.
The Western Athletic Conference has 9 members but eliminated football from the conference. Members with football teams are Independent. Members of the WAC includes, California Baptist, Chicago State, Dixie State, Grand Canyon, New Mexico State, Seattle University, Tarleton State, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and Utah Valley.
