SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The timelines of social media experienced a frenzy of posts during the football game between the No. 13 BYU Cougars and No. 18 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
The Chanticleers hosted the Cougars in Conway, South Carolina on Saturday, December 5.
BYU lost 22-17 to Coastal Carolina.
BYU DT K Tonga is big and fast, forced a bad holding call with that combo.

The Badgers have been moved to TV 2 for BYU/Coastal. Have to have more fire to earn TV 1. Sometimes tough love is necessary

The speed BYU is wanting to play at. Sheesh. 😅😳
— Andrew Dockery (@AndrewWMBF) December 5, 2020
The BYU OL is getting ridiculous push early in this game, driving their guys as much as five yards downfield on some run plays. Gotta straighten out the pass pro vs firing LBs and DBs though. #BYUvsCCU

.@teddyjgallagher with a big time stop to force a BYU punt. 9:31 left in the first.

Amazing what a top QB does for viewing habits. Couldn’t pay me to watch BYU/Coastal normally. Instead locked in on a Saturday. Easy to see why CFB thrives. Prospects devlop, buzz grows, we watch. Simple formula
— John Middlekauff (@JohnMiddlekauff) December 5, 2020
The thing that's surprising about Coastal Carolina is how much beef they have. The offense is smartly designed and they have the QB and receivers, but clearly there is tremendous BBQ in Myrtle Beach because their big guys don't get pushed around, even against App and BYU

— Brandon Bostick (@Bostick11) December 5, 2020
BYU's offense is explosive, but you can't be explosive when Coastal is chewing up the clock like this.
— Chris Vannini 😷 (@ChrisVannini) December 5, 2020
BYU making them convert 3rd downs. Coastal curious to see when they take a shot.
— Michael Felder (@InTheBleachers) December 5, 2020
One of the big concerns of the BYU staff was Coastal Carolina limiting possessions. Well, that’s coming to life on this endless 14-play drive. BYU may get only one first-quarter possession.
— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) December 5, 2020
This is such a tough running game to prepare for under normal circumstances. BYU is flooding the box and sending pressure to the RB side but Coastal can still run it up the gut with success and then McCall can hit throws v. man coverage. Coastal can hang, folks.
— Benjamin Solak (@BenjaminSolak) December 5, 2020
That was an incredible drive by @CoastalFootball, CCU with an early 6-0 lead over BYU late in the 1st quarter. Controlled the clock and outmanned the Cougars on that drive.
— Chris Parks (@ChrisParksWBTW) December 5, 2020
Great drive by @CoastalFootball to take a 6-0 lead against BYU at the end of the first quarter.
— Mike Mooneyham (@ByMikeMooneyham) December 5, 2020

— Yahoo Sports College Football (@YahooSportsCFB) December 5, 2020
There's that explosive BYU offense we have seen all season, they have an answer, BYU leads CCU, 7-6 in the 2nd quarter.
— Chris Parks (@ChrisParksWBTW) December 5, 2020
BYU RB Tyler Allgeier was No. 5 nationally in runs of 30+ yards entering today. A 42-yard TD run gives BYU a 7-6 lead.

— Matt Vereen (@MattVereen) December 5, 2020
BYU running double passes like it’s a zone run. Just run normal plays with your sweet qb. That’s your advantage. You don’t need to trick them. The best player in the game is on your team
— John Middlekauff (@JohnMiddlekauff) December 5, 2020
Gotta take advantage off the turnover but instead BYU goes 4 and out. I like the aggressiveness of Kalani though.

1. Punt after holding penalty left 3rd and 17.
2. TD, 17 plays w no big plays, but no mistakes.
3. Lost a fumble.
Key for BYU defense is don't give up chunk plays, take advantage of mistakes. #byuvsccu

BYU running back just ran back -20 yards. I’d say that win or lose…a bit overrated. Coastal doing a nice job.
— Brad Carson (@BradCarson) December 6, 2020
lol he lost way more than 10.
Now BYU has to punt.
No idea what Chris Jackson was thinking. That was his first catch of the game … and it went for -16 yards.
— Yahoo Sports College Football (@YahooSportsCFB) December 6, 2020
BYU completed a pass past the line of scrimmage and lost 20 yards.
— Chris Vannini 😷 (@ChrisVannini) December 6, 2020
#BYU & #CostalCarolina are going to break the bonkers meter before this is done.
— Charlie Clifford (@cliffWISH8) December 6, 2020
Coastal gets the ball back up 5 with 8:43 left. If they do what they do, BYU might not get the ball back.
— Stewart Mandel (@slmandel) December 6, 2020
Credit to this Coastal defense – love the aggressiveness. But the BYU WRs are sabotaging BYU's chances to win this game.
— Dane Brugler (@dpbrugler) December 6, 2020
Momentum continues in the favor of @CoastalFootball. I don’t think BYU has been the same since the scrum there since halftime.
A TD here would be monumental. Come on, Coastal.
— Andrew Dockery (@AndrewWMBF) December 6, 2020
#BYU has never needed to force a three-and-out more than right now. Chants are clock eaters. Need to get them off the field after three plays.#BYUvsCCU #BYUFootball @kslsports
— Mitch Harper (@Mitch_Harper) December 6, 2020
The DEFENSE of @CoastalFootball is sending a message to QB Zach Wilson of BYU tonight
— Harry Douglas (@HDouglas83) December 6, 2020
BYU @ Coastal Carolina is the world’s best and worst bachelor party.
— Will Brinson (@WillBrinson) December 6, 2020
BYU acting like a team not accustomed to being in these situations. Some bad mental errors. Coastal has been in and won these games multiple times this year.
— Benjamin Solak (@BenjaminSolak) December 6, 2020
A rare 3rd & long for Coastal Carolina tonight. #BYUvsCCU #BYU @kslsports
— Mitch Harper (@Mitch_Harper) December 6, 2020
Thank you @CoastalFootball and @BYUfootball for figuring out how to make this happen last minute… there’s conferences and teams out there that would NEVER allow this to happen
🗣 THIS GAME IS AWESOME
— Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow) December 6, 2020
Regardless of who wins this game, will the CFB playoff committee think BYU is a contender for the NY6? Coastal has mostly controlled this game.
— Nick Papantonis WPDE (@NickPapantonis) December 6, 2020
Everyone on my timeline watching LSU, and I'm like, you know BYU and Coastal are brewing up a historic rivalry right now, right?
— Andrew Clay (@AndrewClayTV) December 6, 2020
BYU calling timeout before Coastal punted and taking all the time in the world between plays is not helpful when you're trailing and the opponent chews up clock.
— Chris Vannini 😷 (@ChrisVannini) December 6, 2020
BYU can't move the ball against this defense now. 5 minutes to play and Coastal can milk this
— Michael Felder (@InTheBleachers) December 6, 2020
BYU punts on 4th and 5 at midfield with 5 mins and 1 timeout left? Why’d they even play this game?
— Brandon Walker (@BWalkerSEC) December 6, 2020
BYU has one timeout. That was a terrible punt. No way you hand that ball back there.
— Ralph D. Russo (@ralphDrussoAP) December 6, 2020
Byu doing everything possible to not let Wilson decide this game
— Jake (@Procis1on) December 6, 2020
BYU with only one timeout left is HUGE. Took timeouts on 3rd and 20 on offense and 4th and 6 on defense in this half.
— Benjamin Solak (@BenjaminSolak) December 6, 2020
BYU has made some decisions in this game
— Football Chopz (@Pchopz_) December 6, 2020
Handoffs on 2nd and 3rd down and a punt from midfield? Welp, so much for Zach Wilson's moment.
That was pathetic all around, BYU. Only one timeout left, decent chance BYU never gets the ball back
— Jason McIntyre (@jasonrmcintyre) December 6, 2020
BYU punting there when it has just one timeout is about as dumb as it gets
— Sam Cooper (@SamDCooper) December 6, 2020
Coastal and BYU both legit but BYU definitely not looking like a “playoff” contender.
— Matt Leinart (@MattLeinartQB) December 6, 2020
BYU does not look like a "Any team. Any time. Any place" team AT ALL.
Doesn't look like they wanna be here.
— Unnecessary Roughness (@UnnecRoughness) December 6, 2020
That's another Coastal first down. They're on track to do it. BYU is going to have to burn this timeout soon, their final timeout.
— Michael Felder (@InTheBleachers) December 6, 2020
BYU is in serious danger of not touching this ball again.
— Ralph D. Russo (@ralphDrussoAP) December 6, 2020
Have not seen any team get a push on BYU this season. Coastal Carolina getting it done on the line of scrimmage when it needs it the most.
— Kevin McGuire (@KevinOnCFB) December 6, 2020
BYU is in big trouble now. Coastal may be a first down or two away from winning this #UpsetAlert
— Kyle Jordan (@KyleLive5) December 6, 2020
BYU has called it’s final timeout. Next first down basically ends this one.
— Gabe McDonald (@GabeMcDonald_) December 6, 2020
BYU coach is going to regret punting on fourth-and-5 from near midfield. Might not see ball again. Big performance from Coastal. Very physical.
— Jay Posner (@sdutPosner) December 6, 2020
If you just watched Coastal vs BYU and knew nothing about football which QB Wld you want to lead your team? I’d take McCall
— David Pollack (@davidpollack47) December 6, 2020
This BYU vs Coastal Carolina game good!!
— SAMIE PARKER (@SAMIEPARKER) December 6, 2020
Didn’t think Coastal’s ground and pound would be this effective against BYU’s front. Very impressive.
— Dave Miller (@Miller_Dave) December 6, 2020

BYU calls their final timeout with 2:38 left in the game
— Coastal Football (@CoastalFootball) December 6, 2020
Byu looks awful played awful. In all 3 phases of the game. Tough
— Dre Welsey (@KINGxRETRO92) December 6, 2020
BYU could use that timeout now
— Chris Vannini 😷 (@ChrisVannini) December 6, 2020
The BYU Hail Mary win is still in play. We've seen it far too many times to not think its a possibility.
— Troy Machir (@TroyMachir) December 6, 2020
https://twitter.com/YahooSportsCFB/status/1335399069552947200
BYU got the stop. If Zach Wilson wants a shot at the Heisman, a last-minute TD drive here would go a long way.
— Pat Forde (@ByPatForde) December 6, 2020
Totally disagree with the analysis. Kick it. Your defense is dominating #BYU make them go 80+ with no timeouts #CoastalCarolina https://t.co/pNrYYF9gxc
— Dave Ross (@drosssports) December 6, 2020
4th down in Conway. 2 yards. 1 minute to play. BYU receiving a punt. Return is setup
— Michael Felder (@InTheBleachers) December 6, 2020
The Chants have to punt on a fourth down and BYU takes over on their 17 with 55 seconds left
— Coastal Football (@CoastalFootball) December 6, 2020
Coastal Carolina opts to punt.
BYU will take over at its own 17-yard line with 55 seconds to go.
Coastal Carolina leads 22-17.
— Yahoo Sports College Football (@YahooSportsCFB) December 6, 2020
Here is Zach Wilson's moment. Time to shine. 55 seconds to go.#BYU #BYUvsCCU #BYUFootball
— Mitch Harper (@Mitch_Harper) December 6, 2020
87 yards, 55 seconds and no timeouts for BYU.
— Ralph D. Russo (@ralphDrussoAP) December 6, 2020
Doesn't feel good for BYU with a hold on the first play, wasting 12 seconds and guys not getting open
— Michael Felder (@InTheBleachers) December 6, 2020
Zach Wilson has the opportunity to steal this for BYU
— Kyle Jordan (@KyleLive5) December 6, 2020
BYU with 56 seconds to save the world.
— Joseph Goodman (@JoeGoodmanJr) December 6, 2020
Can BYU do this?!
— Heather Dinich (@CFBHeather) December 6, 2020
35 seconds away from a W for Coastal. BYU cannot get open, there are no windows for Wilson
— Michael Felder (@InTheBleachers) December 6, 2020
Zach Wilson put some mustard on that throw to keep BYU alive.
— Patrick Schmidt (@PatrickASchmidt) December 6, 2020
Did not expect a Sun Belt front to swarm a veteran BYU OL tonight.
— Bryan Fischer (@BryanDFischer) December 6, 2020
https://twitter.com/ericksmith/status/1335400426909396992?s=20
BYU is going to have at least one shot at the end zone with seven seconds remaining. Get to ESPNU.
— Yahoo Sports College Football (@YahooSportsCFB) December 6, 2020
One play. #BYU
— Dave Ross (@drosssports) December 6, 2020
If only BYU didn't waste that timeout…
— Bonta Hill (@BontaHill) December 6, 2020
I didn't know four days ago how badly I needed this game in my life. So glad it happened & credit to both BYU and Coastal for the willingness to play it.
— Nicole Auerbach 😷 (@NicoleAuerbach) December 6, 2020
Down goes BYU
— James H. Williams (@JHWreporter) December 6, 2020
Thanks, @BYUfootball and @CoastalFootball for a helluva game. Much respect to BYU for traveling cross country on no notice. Much respect to Chants for complete performance. Well done by both.

i'm sure there will be rational takes about this byu/coastal game that was thrown together 60 hours ago.
— KP (@KP_Show) December 6, 2020
WOW wow wow BYU comes up 1 yard short. What a great explosive high intensity game. Hats off to @CoastalFootball. #BYUvsCC
— Stacey Leissing (@stacey_writes) December 6, 2020
So much freaking respect for BYU after tonight. Great team.
— Joseph Goodman (@JoeGoodmanJr) December 6, 2020
What a great game. Coastal had a great game plan and executed it well. Much respect for BYU for their performance and taking this game on short notice. It was everything we hoped for.
— Jerry Palm (@jppalmCBS) December 6, 2020
Coastal Carolina beats BYU in the battle of unbeatens!
— Jermaine Ferrell (@JermaineFerrell) December 6, 2020
How about Coastal Carolina. From FCS four years ago to hosting College GameDay, setting up a game with undefeated BYU on short notice and then winning to go to 10-0. Hats off to both teams. Great game.
— Christopher Gabriel (@CGProgram) December 6, 2020
THAT, was a bad mamma-jamma college football game.
I think BYU is pretty dang good and Coastal Carolina just stopped them on the 2 YD line for the win. Coastal is for real.
Great on BOTH schools for making this happen, they’re both deserving of high praise.
