PROVO, Utah – The top priority for BYU football on the scheduling front lately has been to get games in 2020. But when Tom Holmoe and BYU brass add games that they have to travel to, as is the case with Saturday’s game against Coastal Carolina, the Cougars would like a return trip to Provo.

BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe wanted to lock down the 2020 game first. That’s now in the bag as the undefeated teams will square off in a game featuring College GameDay this Saturday. Any future games will be discussed after the season.
Home-and-home for BYU/Coastal Carolina?
“We obviously don’t have any contracts drawn yet,” said Holmoe. “But look, Matt [Hogue] at Coastal and I got on the phone, we don’t know each other, but this can happen. We’re ADs. You can do this. We have help from ESPN; we have a lot of people working for us. We get way more attention for something like this. But we have so many people putting this together.
“We’ll get down there [in contract talks] somehow. We’re not going to ask for payment or anything, just are you willing to come back and play another game in Provo at some time, so it’s a home-and-home? And he said, ‘yes.’ I said, ‘okay, we’ll work it out.’ We’ll work it out after the season.”
Coastal Carolina plays in the Sun Belt Conference, a league that allows its members to play four non-conference games per season. The Chanticleers have openings on the non-conference schedule every year from 2022-2029 per FBschedules.com. BYU being an FBS Independent and having a television partner with ESPN gives BYU flexibility in scheduling to add a game down the road in Provo with the Chanticleers.
The Cougars are full for the 2021 season but currently have two openings on the 2022 and 2023 schedules.
Saturday’s meeting between BYU and Coastal Carolina will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Chanticleers became a full-time FBS member in 2017. This is their first season at the FBS level with a winning record.
