OREM, Utah – The Utah Valley men’s basketball team held off a second half comeback attempt by the Westminster Griffins to earn their second win of the 2020-21 season.

The Wolverines hosted the Griffins on Wednesday, December 2.

After owning a 42-25 lead at halftime, UVU’s lead slipped during the final 20 minutes of action.

With 5:42 remaining, Westminster’s Reme Torbert cut Utah Valley’s lead to 60-55.

Despite poor foul shooting in the second half, the Wolverines were able to earn enough at the charity stripe and from the field to hold off the Griffins for a 79-71 win.

All five of UVU’s starters scored in double figures, led by Le’Tre Darthard and Jamison Overton, who each scored 16 points.

Joey Andrews led Westminster with a game-high 17 points on 5-8 shooting.

Overall, the Wolverines shot 45.0 percent from the field, including 33.3 percent from downtown.

By comparison, the Griffins ended up shooting 41.1 percent overall and 27.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Westminster fell to 0-2 in its exhibition games. The Griffins open their season against MSU Denver on Friday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. (MDT).

With the win, Utah Valley improved to 2-1 on the season.

UVU’s next game is against Southern Utah on Wednesday, December 9 at 6 p.m. (MDT). The game will broadcast on the KSL TV app.
