No. 17 Spanish Fork Sneaks Past No. 16 Highland For First Round Road Victory

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The 17-seed Spanish Fork Dons were able to get past No. 16 Highland, 33-28 in the first round of the 5A state football playoffs.
The Dons had a 27-7 halftime lead before the Rams trimmed the deficit to six entering the fourth quarter but Highland’s comeback attempt came up short. Spanish Fork had one passing touchdown to Jona Turagovou. Jace Gunter, Jacob Tutagavou and Zac Dart each had a rushing score. For Highland, Isaiah Marina ran in two scores on the ground, while Aisea Mahina and Patrick Brennan added a touchdown apiece.
Spanish Fork will advance to the second round to face No. 1 Brighton (9-0) on Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.

No. 20 Woods Cross 8 at No. 13 Box Elder 22
Parker Buchanan led No. 13 seed Box Elder past No. 20 Woods Cross 22-8 on Friday night. Buchanan scored all three touchdowns for the Bees.
Box Elder will move on to the second round to battle No. 4 Salem Hills (7-2) on Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.

No. 21 Viewmont 14 at No. 12 Lehi 52
Creyton Cooper accounted for two touchdowns, one passing and one rushing. Takeshi Faupula had two rushing TD’s and one receiving. Peyton Dieters added a rushing score. Steel Cooper threw a passing touchdown while Isaiah Tauai caught one in the end zone. Carson Gwilliam recovered a blocked kick for a touchdown for Lehi. Will Schultz threw two touchdowns to Jessen Layton and Derek Riederer for the Vikings.
Lehi will advance to the second round to face No. 5 Wasatch (7-2) on Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.
No. 18 Provo 34 at No. 15 Mountain Ridge 14
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 28-7 lead in the first half and coasted to the first round victory. Jace Welsch accounted for three touchdowns, two passing and one rushing. He connected with Talo Takitaki and Trapper Anderton. Kyson Condie added a rushing TD for Provo. For Mountain Ridge, Ayden Helm and Cade Uluave each scored a touchdown on the ground.
Provo will move on to the second round to battle No. 2 Orem (4-2) on Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.
No. 23 Hillcrest 7 at No. 10 Bountiful 62
The Braves scored 56 unanswered points before the Huskies scored their only TD of the game. Anthony Vail threw Hillcrest’s only touchdown to Brady Dicarro. For Bountiful, Corbin Dubois and Mitch Moldre each ran in two touchdowns, while Corbin Cottle had one score on the ground. Boston Malmrose threw a touchdown pass to Bridger Morton. Brooks Fornelius added a pick six and Cottle returned a kickoff for a score.
Bountiful will advance to the second round to face No. 7 Skyline (7-1) on Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.
No. 19 Farmington 17 at No. 14 Alta 42
The No. 14 Atla Hawks handled their business against the No. 19 Farmington Phoenix. Alta quarterback Ethan Jackson tossed four touchdown passes in the win.
Alta will move on to the second round to battle No. 3 Bonneville (8-1) on Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.
No. 22 Murray 0 at No. 11 Springville 36
No. 11 seed Springville shutout No. 22 Murray 36-0 behind a big first half performance. The Red Devils scored 16 points in the opening quarter and added 20 more points in the second quarter. Springville’s Cole Clement scored three touchdowns.
Springville will advance to the second round to face No. 6 Maple Mountain (7-2) on Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.
