SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Uintah School District announced on Tuesday that their varsity football game against Stansbury has been canceled.
The district announced that Uintah received a positive case of COVID-19. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, October 14 at Uintah High School. The contest between the Utes and Stallions will not be rescheduled.
The cancellation is necessary because the majority of the school’s varsity football players and coaches had close, prolonged contact with an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19. The contact took place during an indoor team meeting on Monday where masks were not worn.
Tuesday’s freshman/sophomore game at Stansbury High School has been canceled as a precaution. The team had not reached Stansbury when the decision to cancel the game was made and are returning to Vernal.
“TriCounty Health Department appreciates its partners in education and their continued efforts to take measures to slow the spread of COVID-19 while still offering and preserving a healthy in-person learning environment,” TriCounty Health Officer Jordan Mathis said. “Especially when it means that they have to make tough decisions like the Uintah School District made today. This decision is supported and rooted in sound public health practice.”
Uintah will finish their regular season with a 0-9 record and will await the UHSAA 4A State Tournament bracket to be released. The same will happen for Stansbury after ending their regular season with a 6-2 record.
