BYU’s Newly Scheduled Game Against SDSU Lands On Assistant Coach’s Wedding Day

PROVO, Utah – BYU’s newest addition to the 2020 schedule was a home game against San Diego State in December, a major shakeup to the personal schedule of offensive line coach Eric Mateos.
Shortly after the game between the old Mountain West rivals was announced, Mateos wrote on Twitter an action he was about to call his fiancée that their wedding day now needed to be changed.

Dang, COVID-19 continues to impact everything. Typically, the second weekend of December has no college football games on the schedule other than the Army-Navy game. It’s one week after a typical Championship Saturday and one week before the start of the bowl season. It was the perfect date for a busy college football coach to have a wedding.
But as we all know, COVID-19 has created unprecedented schedules in 2020. The BYU-San Diego State matchup will mark the first time the Cougars have played a home game at LaVell Edwards Stadium in December. BYU has been playing football dating back to 1922.
Eric Mateos proposal to his fiancée
Mateos, a second-year offensive line coach on Kalani Sitake’s staff, proposed to his fiancee back in September, according to his personal Twitter account.

On the field, Mateos’ offensive line unit has been dominant to begin the 2020 season. The BYU offensive line is the second-highest graded offensive line in the country, behind only Notre Dame, according to Pro Football Focus. But Mateos doesn’t want his guys consuming any of that talk, or as he calls it “poison.”

Congratulations to the happy couple on their engagement and eventual wedding day. Hopefully, the special day can get rescheduled soon without any other interruptions.
