PROVO, Utah – Mountain West Conference football is returning and with it is the potential return of the annual BYU-Boise State matchup.
MWC Commissioner Craig Thompson held a Zoom press conference on Friday, discussing the conference’s return to football this fall. Thompson was asked how the schedule for the MWC will be structured when it returns on October 24th.

“Army and Navy and Air Force will be out of the conference. There’s the potential that a Boise State-BYU previously scheduled game could be played. Other than that, it will be all conference [games],” said Thompson.
BYU and Boise State have been squaring off against one another on an annual basis since 2012. The two programs have a strong working relationship and last lined up a scheduling extension that will have the game played every year except for 2034.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic impacted everyone’s scheduling for the 2020 season, BYU and Boise State were scheduled to play on Friday, November 6th.

BYU still has that weekend open to add the Broncos back onto the schedule. As for Boise State, their schedule has yet to be officially released by the Mountain West. Thompson said in the Zoom call that he would be meeting with Athletic Directors in the coming weeks to piece together the league’s schedule.
BYU is 1-0 right now and ranked No. 18 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll. The Cougars have seven scheduled games remaining on their 2020 slate with the possibility of an eighth if the postponed game against Army West Point is added to the schedule at a later date.
