The Tour Championship will signify an end to the strangest PGA Tour season that has ever existed. Due to the coronavirus, the PGA Tour scrambled in an effort to put a bow on the 2019-20 season. The scrambling paid off, as the PGA Tour became the first professional sporting league to successfully, and safely, return to competitive play following the worldwide sport lockdown that took place earlier this year.
The top 30 players on the FedEx Cup standings will compete in the four-round event at East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta, Georgia starting this Friday, September 4th.
The format is unlike any other golf tournament throughout the PGA Season. In 2018, the format for the Tour Championship changed to a staggered start to ensure that the winner of the Tour Championship also won the FedEx Cup.
The Tour Championship also provides the largest purse on the PGA calendar as a combined $46 million dollars will be handed out following the conclusion of the event. The winner will receive $15 million dollars.
The next largest purse on the calendar is The Players Championship, which was ultimately cancelled mid-tournament due to the coronavirus pandemic earlier this year, which hands out a combined $15 million dollars with the winner receiving $2.7 million.

Finau is looking to become only the second player with ties to the state of Utah to win the Tour Championship, following in the footsteps of BYU alumni Mike Weir who became the only Canadian to win the event back in 2001.
