PROVO, Utah – BYU tight end Matt Bushman suffered an injury in practice on Monday and was carted off the field, sources tell KSL Sports.
The senior star who turned down the NFL to return to BYU for one more season suffered an injury towards the end of practice. KSL Sports is working to confirm the details of Bushman’s injury. Sources have indicated that the team held a prayer after Bushman was carted off the practice field.
Bushman’s teammates were devastated and tears were shed according to sources for the player who has been a leader by example during his BYU career the past three seasons.
KSL Sports reached out to BYU for comment on Matt Bushman’s injury. A BYU spokesperson responded stating that the program doesn’t discuss injuries unless confirmed to be season-ending after all evaluations are completed.
Bushman had suffered a mild injury earlier this month that caused him to miss a few days of fall camp, but he later returned to participate in the final two scrimmages of camp.
The timeline for how long Bushman will be out from this latest injury is not known at this time.
What Matt Bushman means to BYU
“He’s not a real vocal guy. He’s very humble, soft-spoken, and hilarious when you get to know him. He’s a really funny guy and he’s a great teacher. His teammates look up to him,” BYU tight end coach Steve Clark said about Bushman to KSL Sports in June.
Bushman finished last season with 688 receiving yards in a year where he faced consistent bracket coverage. The 688 yards led all receivers and marked the third consecutive year Bushman led BYU in receiving yards.
Earlier this month, the Reese’s Senior Bowl, one of college football’s most prestigious All-Star games, ranked Bushman on their top 250 seniors list for the upcoming season.
BYU opens its 2020 season this Monday on Labor Day night against the Navy Midshipmen in Annapolis.
