Provo’s 4th Quarter TD, Defense Leads To Region Win Over Spanish Fork

SPANISH FORK, Utah – It took a touchdown in the fourth quarter for Provo to pick up a 12-7 win over Spanish Fork in the Game Night Live Game of the Week.

Provo quarterback Jace Welsh accounted for both touchdowns for the Bulldogs, one passing and one rushing. Rock Magelby hauled in the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter.

For Spanish Fork, quarterback Zac Dart connected with Cade Olsen for a long touchdown near the end of the third quarter, losing their Region 8 opener.

Strong Defensive Effort In First Half

The Dons were forced to punt on their first drive of the game. After some good chunk runs by Dallin Havea, penalties by the Bulldogs forced them to punt. When Spanish Fork got the ball back, they turned the ball over on downs near midfield. The Dons had the ball when the first quarter ended with both teams being held scoreless.

On the first play of the second quarter, the Dons fumbled the ball after the receiver had the ball knocked out on a tackle. Shortly after the turnover, Welsch ran in a 34-yard touchdown to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead with 11:08 remaining in the first half after they missed the extra point.

After each team exchanged punts, the Dons picked up a big play after Jeffrey Hernandez ripped the ball out of the Provo receivers’ hands. It gave Spanish Fork 1:46 to try and get a touchdown before halftime but they couldn’t capitalize.

Offense Picks Up In Second Half

Spanish Fork had some momentum heading down the field towards the end of the third quarter. On third and 25 back in their own territory, Zac Dart threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Cade Olsen to give the Dons a 7-6 lead with 9.6 remaining in the third period.

Provo answered with a touchdown as Welsch found Rock Magelby for a 16-yard score to give the Bulldogs a 12-7 lead with 9:18 left in the game. They didn’t get the two-point conversion. As Spanish Fork was trucking down the field, Provo intercepted Dart’s pass in the end zone with under five minutes remaining. With 1:50 left, Spanish Fork got the ball back for one last chance to win the game. Dart threw another interception on the potential game-winning drive.

The Bulldogs improved their record to 2-1 on the season. They will host Springville next Friday at 7 p.m.

For Spanish Fork, they fall to 2-2 on the year. They will travel to Wasatch next Friday at 7 p.m.

The Game Night Live Game of the Week next week will feature the Sky View Bobcats traveling to Green Canyon. The game will kickoff at 7 p.m. on Friday and will be broadcast on KSLSports.com and the KSL TV app.
