SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Minnesota Timberwolves will have the first overall pick in the October 16 NBA Draft. The Timberwolves won the draft lottery Thursday night, while the Golden State Warriors will select second, and the Charlotte Hornets will pick third.
The Timberwolves were tied with the Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers for the best odds of winning the lottery. The three teams each had a 14 percent chance of earning the pick.
The NBA Draft Lottery determines the top four picks in the draft, and the remaining selections are decided by end of season standings. The Hornets climbed into the third seed despite having the seventh-best odds to win the lottery. The Chicago Bulls climbed to fourth, despite having the sixth-best odds. The Cavaliers dropped the furthest of any team in the lottery. Cleveland will pick fifth despite being tied for the best odds to win the lottery.
