So the dates that BYU has openings currently are September 12th, October 24th, October 31st, November 7th, November 14th, and November 28th. Not bad all things considered after losing 10 of its original 12 games.
It’s possible the Texas State game could be played on October 24th as both teams have openings on their schedules that week.
Let’s size up the weeks that BYU has openings and see what possibilities are still out there.
September 12th
I project this week will be a bye. Especially with the Cougars playing two cross-country games in a 12-day period. Hard to imagine another football game slammed in between that extensive travel. But, nobody knows when the season could have the plugged pulled during this pandemic. So maybe there’s consideration to front-load the schedule as much as possible. If BYU did play a game on this date. Here are some possibilities.
At Boston College, at Pitt, at Virginia, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Cincinnati, Memphis, Temple, UCF, and USF.
October 2nd/3rd
If Texas State doesn’t end up on October 3rd and gets moved to October 24th, below are teams that have openings on the General Conference weekend.
Keep in mind, BYU has played on General Conference Saturday before, but you have to go all the way back to 2003. That was a late-night kick against San Diego State and former Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints President Gordon B. Hinckley said he would cut his Priesthood session talk short to allow the congregation to watch the game. Which obviously got a lot of laughs in chapels around the country.
Have to think BYU wants a home game here and it would likely get the Friday night ESPN treatment. ESPN has always been accommodating to BYU in regard to scheduling around General Conference or Women’s Conference weekends.
UTEP, Temple, Tulane, Appalachian State, Louisiana, Texas State* (reported to play on this weekend in Provo)
October 24th
North Texas, Western Kentucky, East Carolina, Texas State* (note above)
October 31st
At Pitt, Middle Tennessee, USF
November 7th
At Wake Forest, Marshall, UAB, UCF
November 14th
No FBS team that is playing fall football has an opening on this date. There are FCS programs that are still choosing to play football this fall in leagues that approve up to four non-conference games.
November 28th
Marshall
