Utah Jazz Guard Donovan Mitchell Becomes Third-Fastest Active NBA Player To Score 5,000 Points

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell became the third-fastest active NBA player to score 5,000 career points during Utah’s loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

On Saturday, August 1, the Jazz fell 110-94 to the Thunder at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World in Florida.

Mitchell scored 13 points in the loss but surpassed 5,000 points in his NBA career.

The Jazz guard reached the milestone in 221 games and joined some elite company in doing so.

He is the third-fastest active NBA player to score 5,000 points. The only active players to reach the 5,000 point milestone faster were Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James and Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant.

James reached the mark in 197 games. Durant hit 5,000 career points in 205 games.

Some of James’ career accomplishments include:

  • Three-time NBA champion
  • Three-time NBA Finals MVP
  • Four-time NBA Most Valuable Player
  • 16-time NBA All-Star
  • Three-time NBA All-Star Game MVP
  • 12-time All-NBA First Team
  • Five-time NBA All-Defensive First Team
  • One-time NBA scoring champion

During Durant’s career, he’s received the following accolades:

  • Two-time NBA champion
  • Two-time NBA Finals MVP
  • One-time NBA Most Valuable Player
  • 10-time NBA All-Star
  • Two-time NBA All-Star Game MVP
  • Six-time All-NBA First Team
  • Four-time NBA scoring champion

By reaching the 5,000 point mark, that doesn’t automatically mean Mitchell is on the path to greatness that James and Durant have already reached. However, joining such an elite group goes to show what the Jazz guard has already accomplished during his first three seasons in the league.

Earlier in 2020, he earned his first NBA All-Star selection. Currently, Mitchell has helped the Jazz to a top-four spot in the Western Conference standings with six games left until the postseason.

Next up for Mitchell and the Jazz is a meeting with the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday, August 3 at 7:00 p.m. (MDT). The game will broadcast on ESPN, AT&T SportsNet, and 97.5 FM.
