MADRID – Zinedine Zidane knew Real Madrid would be OK despite a humiliating 7-3 defeat to rival Atlético Madrid in a friendly in the United States in the preseason. And he was right.

Zidane and Madrid are celebrating the Spanish league title almost a year after that loss.

It is the team’s first league trophy since Zidane returned as coach and the first since Cristiano Ronaldo left to join Juventus.

Madrid sealed its record 34th league title with a 1-0 win over Villarreal at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium.

It has a seven-point lead over second-place Barcelona with one round to go.
