SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes said Andy Reid’s future plans played “a huge part” in his decision to sign a 10-year contract extension with the Chiefs.

Mahomes officially signed a 10-year, $503 million extension with the Chiefs on Monday, July 6.

During a press conference on Tuesday, July 7, the Super Bowl LIV MVP said that he spoke with Reid before the deal and the head coach’s plans to not retire “anytime soon” were a major factor in him signing a long term deal with Kansas City.

“Yeah I talked to him I think before I signed the deal,” Mahomes said. “He had no thoughts on retiring anytime soon. I mean obviously that’s a huge part in it.”

About Andy Reid

Reid played college football at BYU from 1978-80 and returned to Provo as a graduate assistant on BYU head coach LaVell Edwards’ staff.

After a few years of coaching college football, Reid accepted a position with the Green Bay Packers in 1992.

He received his first NFL head coach position with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999. Reid led the Eagles to an appearance in Super Bowl XXXIX where they fell to the New England Patriots 24-21.

After the 2012 season, Reid’s contract with the Eagles wasn’t renewed.

In January 2013, he accepted the head coach position with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Reid helped led Mahomes and the Chiefs to a 31-20 over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV on February 6, 2020.

About Patrick Mahomes

After a college career at Texas Tech, the Chiefs selected Mahomes with the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Mahomes served as the backup quarterback to former Kansas City QB Alex Smith during his rookie season. After Mahomes first year, the Chiefs traded Smith to the Washington Redskins and cleared the path for the former Red Raider to take over.

In his first season as Kansas City’s starter, Mahomes led the franchise to a 12-4 record and a third straight division title. The Chiefs fell to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots in the AFC Championship. Mahomes was honored as the 2018 NFL MVP.

Last season, Mahomes helped the Chiefs post a 12-4 record and earn a first-round bye in the postseason. Kansas City reached the Super Bowl for the first time since 1970.

After trailing 20-10 against the San Francisco 49ers, the third-year quarterback led the Chiefs on a 21-0 run to comeback and win Super Bowl LIV. Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP.
