SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Jay Hill and the Weber State Wildcats landed a transfer in BYU offensive lineman Ethan Atagi. A 6-foot-5, 323-pound center at BYU, Atagi appeared in two games the past two years he walked-on with the Cougars.
“I’ve loved every second of my time at BYU. I love my teammates and we’re brothers forever. That being said, I’ve decided to transfer. After much thought and prayer, I feel that it’s the best decision for me,” Atagi wrote on his personal Instagram page.
Atagi prepped at Bonneville High School, which is only three miles away from the Weber State campus. In 2018, Atagi suffered a season-ending injury to his foot during fall camp where he was seeing second-team reps behind James Empey at the center position.
Last season, Atagi took reps at the center spot in games against Idaho State and UMass.
BYU offensive line coach Eric Mateos tweeted on Atagi’s departure saying, “Going to miss my guy @atagi66. He has added so much value to our unit and I will definitely miss my extra set of eyes this fall. He has contributed very much to our program. Much love brotha and go achieve your goals.”
Going to Weber State will pair up Ethan Atagi with his younger brother, Noah Atagi, a starting offensive lineman for the Wildcats. Last season, Noah Atagi started in 14 games during the Wildcats 11-4 season that concluded in the FCS Semifinals.
