OREM, Utah – Former BYU basketball guard Blaze Nield announced that he’s transferred to Utah Valley University and will play for Wolverines head coach Mark Madsen.
Nield and UVU confirmed the transfer on Thursday, April 16.
“Excited to officially be a Wolverine!” Nield tweeted.

“Blaze Nield is a point guard leader,” said Madsen. “I love the defensive energy that Blaze brings to every game and his poise when directing his team. Blaze is a gifted passer who has the ability to set his teammates up while also finding the balance to score the ball himself keeping the defense honest. It’s rare to have a point guard who has the broad skill set that Blaze possesses—from shooting threes to getting into the paint and rebounding with physicality. Blaze is an outstanding student and will fit seamlessly into the UVU community. I’m excited to welcome Blaze and his family to campus.”
The guard’s transfer down University Parkway from Provo to Orem came nearly a month after news broke that he’d entered college basketball’s Transfer Portal.
Nield joined the BYU basketball program for the 2019-20 season after playing at Utah State Eastern.
He appeared in 17 games for the Mark Pope’s Cougars last season. Nield averaged 0.7 points, 0.1 rebounds, and 0.5 assists.

Nield joined fellow former BYU player Colby Leifson in transferring to UVU. Leifson officially transferred to Utah Valley University and joined the Wolverines at the end of March.
The Wolverines finished the 2019-20 season in 8th place in the Western Athletic Conference. Utah Valley wrapped up Madsen’s inaugural season as head coach with an 11-19 record.
