SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former Utah Utes center Matt Van Komen has decided to transfer to St. Mary’s.
The former Runnin’ Ute entered the transfer portal on March 21 after finishing his freshman season at Utah.
Van Komen will make the move from the Pac-12 to the West Coast Conference where the Gaels finished second in the WCC Basketball Tournament in 2020, falling to Gonzaga in the championship game.
He committed to Utah after playing his high school ball at Pleasant Grove. The Vikings’ twitter account announced Van Komen’s decision to go to St. Mary’s.

This past season at Utah, Van Komen played in nine games. He averaged 1.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, and just under a block per contest.
It is unknown if Van Komen will have to sit out one season with St. Mary’s. The NCAA will vote this year to decide whether first time transfers can be immediately eligible.
Van Komen was considered a high three-star prospect in the 2019 class, according to 247Sports.
The seven-footer is currently the only Utah player to enter the transfer portal this offseason.
