SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former Utah cornerback Jaylon Johnson will undergo surgery next week to repair a torn labrum that he suffered in September while playing for the Utes.
According to NFL.com reporter Tom Pelissero, Johnson will fully participate in the NFL Scouting Combine that will begin this week before having surgery on his shoulder on March 4.
Johnson’s physician, Dr. Peter Millett wrote in a letter to all 32 NFL teams last week that he recommended surgery and will be the one to perform the procedure . The typical timeline for a procedure like this is five months to return to full football activities.
The former Utah cornerback played through the injury for the last two months of his final season with the Utes. According to Johnson’s agent, Jaylon wanted to play with the team in his last season and not let them down.

Johnson is projected to be either a late first round or early second round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. During his three seasons with the Utes, Johnson recorded 102 tackles, seven interceptions and 21 pass break-ups.
Pelissero compared Johnson’s situation with defensive tackle Jerry Tillery, who fully participated in the combine before having surgery for a torn labrum and was taken as the 28th pick by the Los Angeles Chargers. Tillery was ready to play by Week 1 and played 15 games as a rookie.
