“Arizona State is very good and they are so hard to beat. I thought today our team was tremendously mentally tough,” Utes head coach Lynne Roberts said after the game. “We talked about how Arizona State does a really good job of how they compete and they make you earn everything. I thought our kids stayed next play mentality and that allowed us to start cutting their lead. I thought our third quarter might have been the best quarter we’ve played all year in terms of our defense. They didn’t get a single offensive rebound.”
Dru Gylten was fantastic as well, recording a double-double with 10 points and 12 assists as well as 5 rebounds.
The Sun Devils outscored Utah 25-16 in the opening quarter. The Utes countered with a 19-17 advantage in the second quarter to trail Arizona State by seven points. The third quarter was the difference in this game as the Utes scored 26 points and held Arizona State to 15.
Relli Richardson led the Sun Devils and all scorers with 22 points and knocked down 6 three-pointers.
Utah improved their record to 13-14 overall and 6-10 in Pac-12 play. They will play two more games on the road to end the regular season beginning with USC on Friday, February 28 at 7 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.
