Following the success of last year’s League’s Cup this year it will feature an extended field of teams. MLS teams qualified for the cup based on successes in the 2019 season.
“It’s special when you can compete against someone from outside MLS. It’s important for us to compete for trophies, and Leagues Cup gives us the chance to do that,” said Real Salt Lake head coach Freddy Jaurez.
Real Salt Lake’s season kicks off on February 29 at Orlando City SC. The Leagues Cup will take place through the summer between July 21 and September 16.

“MLS is getting better and better every year and we’ve seen it in Champions League and now Leagues Cup,” Albert Rusnak of RSL said. “Every team in this competition wants to win and that’s what we’re going to try and do.”
New for the 2020 edition of the tournament will be the inclusion of a draw to determine the matchups between clubs from both leagues ahead of the Round of 16. MLS and LIGA MX teams will be seeded and drawn to ensure the most competitive matches, with a second draw ahead of the Quarterfinals, to guarantee the most amount of interleague play. Seeding for the 2020 MLS Leagues Cup participants is as follows.
Other participants from the MLS include Philadelphia Union, Minnesota United FC, LA Galaxy, Toronto FC, D.C. United, Portland Timbers and New York Red Bulls.
