Mulholland, 31, received a new one-year contract for the 2020 season.
“Luke is an established member of our club and community and we are thrilled to have him back in an RSL jersey for the 2020 season,” RSL General Manager Elliot Fall said. “He is a player who has dealt with significant adversity over the last couple years and has bounced back in a fantastic way. Without his contributions, the Real Monarchs would not have had the postseason success they did last year – that alone shows his level of professionalism and character. He is a role model for our young players both on the field and in the locker room”
Mulholland’s career with RSL has seen its ups and downs. He has appeared in the Claret and Cobalt 123 times since his debut in 2014, scoring 16 goals in the process. However, unfortunately, the last few years have been slow for the Englishmen.
During the 2018 season, Mulholland was out for an entire calendar year with a back problem. Last year he missed a month with a muscle strain and only played one first-team game but was able to contribute to the Monarchs USL Championship run, fortunately.
The Preston, England native hopes to offer stability and experience within the middle of the park. Controlling the midfield under newly appointed manager Freddy Juarez will be paramount for RSL’s success in 2020.
The return of Kyle Beckerman, Everton Luiz and now Luke Mulholland gives RSL a very experienced and talented midfield group.
