Jazz Guard Donovan Mitchell Battled Illness During Win Over Charlotte

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell fought through illness and played 22 minutes in the team’s win over the Charlotte Hornets.
Mitchell and the Jazz defeated the Hornets 109-92 at Vivint Smart Home Arena on Friday, January 10.
The Jazz star struggled during his time on the floor shooting 2-9 from the field for 4 points. Mitchell shot 0-3 on three-pointers and failed to reach the free-throw line against Charlotte.
“You could see it the first you know four or five minutes of the game,” said Jazz head coach Quin Snyder of Mitchell’s illness. “He fought through some stuff tonight.”
Although he was sick and struggled to score, Mitchell contributed and helped his team in other ways.

“He still defended,” continued Snyder. “Other guys have an opportunity to score but he didn’t let his teammates down on the defensive end.”
Mitchell recorded 1 rebound, dished out 4 assists, and had 2 steals against the Hornets. He posted a +8 plus-minus rating during his time on the court helping the Jazz to their eighth consecutive victory.

In Utah’s previous game to the win over the Hornets, Mitchell scored 16 points in a victory over the New York Knicks.
In the win over his hometown team, Mitchell shot 6-11 on field goals including 2-6 from three. He added 3 rebounds, a team-high 6 assists, and a steal in 25 minutes of play.

During Utah’s eight-game winning streak, Mitchell has led the team in scoring and assists in half of the games.
Mitchell has started in each of the Jazz’s 38 games this season. He is averaging 24.2 points per game this season which is good for 15th best in the NBA.
He is shooting 46.1 percent overall and 35.5 percent from behind the arc this season. Mitchell is averaging 4.4 rebounds and 4.4 assists in 34.4 minutes per contest.
Mitchell and the Jazz are on the road to begin a three-game road trip against the Washington Wizards.
